In the summer of 1941, under Stalin's orders, over 40 thousand people from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova and occupied Poland were arrested, shoved into cattle cars and sent into exile in Siberia. Among them was journalist Melanie and her 8 year old son Andrejs, but they were separated from her husband Aleksandrs. The women are treated as slaves and while trying to maintain her dignity in the face of starvation, hard work and disease, Melanie pens hundreds of letters to her husband over a period of sixteen years – which she never sends, since his address in unknown.

The film won an award for Best Cinematography at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year.
