A volcanic eruption started in the Westman Islands in the early hours of January 23rd 1973 and was not declared officially over until July that same year.  During that time most islanders had to leave their homes and move to the mainland, but others stayed and worked hard to save whatever valuables they could and protect as many houses as possible.  As soon as the eruption was officially over families started to move back and were adamant that the island should be rebuilt, filled with life and become green once again.

How the people of this small island had the courage, energy and imagination to dig up a whole island with limited resources and equipment is to many extraordinary.  But, the love for their island seems unconditional, as is quoted in the text of many songs and odes written about the island, some of which will be perfomed tonight along with many others.
